“After a sweep and service, many clients will say their stoves have not worked as well for years!”

Julian, writing on chimney safety in The Grapevine, October/November 2020

How often should your chimney be swept?

Once a year, as a rule

Wood, coal, oil and gas appliances should be swept once a year. On an open fire burning wood or coal it comes down to how often you use it: relied upon daily in season, up to three sweeps a year may be needed; just odd evenings and weekends, more likely one to two, and often a single sweep will be enough. After that it is down to fuel quality and how well it burns.

How you run the stove matters

Wood burning and multi-fuel stoves and range cookers can all have their air turned up and down, so the results depend on the way you run your own appliance. Advice is always given after sweeping.

Soot, tar and a narrowing flue

Soot, tar and creosote build up when a chimney is not hot enough to carry the products of combustion out at the top. The flue slowly narrows, and smoke can pour back into the room. It is one of the most common mistakes made in chimney management, and a partially blocked chimney can also leak carbon monoxide, which has no smell.

Birds in the chimney

Nesting birds can block a chimney that has no proper termination on top. If you find birds nesting in yours, a sweep is restricted by law as to when the nesting material can be removed, to protect the birds and their young. There are suitable terminations, cowls and bird guards for all chimneys, and advice can be given on the right protection.

An Outstanding Service – B&D Chimney Sweeps

We cannot recommend B&D Chimney Sweeps highly enough. Their expertise, knowledge and professionalism when it comes to wood-burning stoves are second to none.

Although their knowledge of wood burners in general is exceptional, they have particular expertise in Clearview Stoves, making them an invaluable choice for owners of these appliances. One of the many things that sets them apart is that they carry a comprehensive range of spare parts on their van, meaning that if anything needs replacing, it can often be dealt with there and then, during the same visit. This is an excellent example of efficiency, forward planning and a genuine commitment to customer service.

Their punctuality is impeccable, communication is consistently excellent, and their attention to detail is exemplary. They are also exceptionally conscientious, always wearing overshoes to protect floor coverings and treating your home with the utmost care and respect.

From start to finish, the entire experience is thoroughly professional. It is rare to find a company that combines such a high level of technical expertise with outstanding reliability, consideration and customer care.

If you own a wood-burning stove, particularly a Clearview, we would recommend B&D Chimney Sweeps without hesitation. They set the standard for what a professional service should be, and we will not hesitate to use them again. Next years sweep is already booked!

A thoroughly deserved five-star recommendation!

Paul Mas · October 2026

Fantastic service! Julian came highly recommended by a neighbour and did an excellent job of cleaning and servicing our wood burning stove. The stove is very old and has seen better days, but Julian took the time to fix it so that it now works perfectly. Julian went out of his way to be helpful, pointing out safety considerations and explaining how to get the best out of our stove. We followed Julian's tips and found to our amazement that our stove kicked out twice as much heat for a fraction of the wood we had been using to heat the house! We were furiously peeling off jumpers! Can't recommend him highly enough!

Katherine E · Google review, March 2024

Having just moved into our property this was our first experience of having a wood burner and Julian came recommended by the previous owner. Julian was extremely professional, informative and kept the area clean whilst servicing the log burner and sweeping the chimney. He even took the time to explain the log burner in detail and how to operate it. We are more than grateful with his visit and would definitely recommend his services and will be using him again next year.

Ken Lamacraft · Google review, October 2019

Julian is brilliant at what he does and very knowledgeable!

We just moved into a house with a log burner and have never used on before. Julian came round, swept and serviced it and gave us lots of useful information and guidance for the operation and maintenance. I’d have never used it without his expert advice so really appreciate the service. Highly recommend.

William B · Google review, January 2024

Julian offers a great service, cleaned our flue & stove and was very thorough. Lots of knowledge and advice, happy to help and answered all my questions. Left our stove sparkling....
